Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and the Effects on Depression and Anxiety

Depression and anxiety are common symptom presentations in my clinical practice. Patients suffering from difficult depressive symptoms that are non-responsive to typical treatment modalities such as medication, nutraceutical or behavioral treatment can benefit significantly from the addition of Hyperbaric treatment.

Multiple patients I have treated who suffer from long term depressive symptoms report an improvement in memory, motivation and significant reduction in fatigue. The inclusion of hyperbaric treatment has changed their energy levels where they are able to complete daily tasks that they would often avoid or procrastinate on. Reduction in physical sensations of anxiety, muscle tension, and headaches often associated with both depression and anxiety improve and are often permanently reduced when 40 sessions are completed.

I have a patient who was suffering from anxiety and depression after the use of multiple substances for several years. Despite clean diet, and nutraceutical care, the patient was “stuck” in a pattern of depression and anxiety that would not improve motivation, fatigue, and memory issues. The patient complained of “being lazy”, and “procrastination of simple activities such as cleaning”. When we added mild hyperbaric treatment to his treatment plan. He noticed a complete improvement in these symptoms after just 5 sessions of treatment with hyperbarics. The patient was hopeful and full of life again, and has remained motivated, and full of energy after 20 sessions of treatment.

I have another patient who suffered from depression associated with osmotic demyelination. The patient was told by her care providers that nothing could be done to change her condition. After 60 sessions of treatment with hyperbarics, the patient no longer experienced tremors, speech difficulties, was motivated, and had renewed energy. The patient’s providers were amazed at her recovery, including her speech therapist who noticed the greatest change in her functioning, and ability to reverse severe stuttering caused by the osmotic demyelination.

In Dr. Daniel Amen’s Bright Minds Program,NFL players were assessed before and after the addition of HBOT to their treatment programs to reverse brain injury. The program determined that blood flow, memory, attention, mood and sleep were 80% improved with the addition of hyperbaric therapy in addition to clean diet, and nutraceutical care. In my opinion, my experience in the use of hyperbarics to address depressive and anxious patients, has proven to add a new layer of treatment option to patients that is permanent and viable. It has been a pleasure being at the cutting edge of this treatment option, and has renewed hope for many of our community members which we serve.
